The Star Ratings for School (SR4S) is a systematic evidence-based approach to measure, monitor and communicate the risk on roads around schools, designed by the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP).  
 
Each day 500 children are killed in preventable traffic crashes around the world. Sometimes they are killed just yards from the school entrance. The United Nations has included road safety in its Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3.6, calling for road deaths and serious injuries to be halved by 2020. SR4S is a useful tool to meeting these global targets for child and adolescent pedestrians.  

SR4S combines a central web application and a data collection mobile app that harness the power of the iRAP Star Rating for Pedestrians to calculate Star Ratings at spot locations, where 1-star is the least safe and 5-star is the safest. In the pilot phase of the programme over 600 locations were assessed with results from every continent to demonstrate the universal application which offers a low-cost way to support quick interventions that start saving lives and preventing serious injuries from day one.

Once the risk is measured, effective scenarios of road treatments and their impact on safety can be simulated to identify cost-effective solutions. SR4S measures safety before and after road improvements, provides an evidence-based rating of road safety, supports education campaigns for students, drivers and the wider community for safe travel around schools and guides decision-makers in prioritising road upgrades around schools by assessing different options. 

SR4S is used by road safety NGOs and FIA Member Clubs around the world with upgraded infrastructure for hundreds of school zones making tens of thousands of school children safer. The system is also being used by NGOs to engage with local, regional and national governments to make the case for wider street intervention.
