The Global Fuel Economy Initiative (GFEI) is a global partnership to support governments around the world to set policies for cleaner and more efficient vehicles through research, global advocacy, and policy solutions. GFEI’s partnership is made up of six of the world’s leading transport and energy organisations: FIA Foundation; United Nation Environment Programme (UNEP); Institute of Transportation Studies at UC Davis  (ITS UC Davies); International Energy Agency (IEA); International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT); And International Transport Forum (ITF).

Road transport is responsible for nearly three quarters of transport greenhouse gas emissions, with passenger vehicles responsible for more than 60% of road emissions. Action is urgently needed to decarbonize transportation rapidly, reaching a near-zero carbon system internationally by 2050.

GFEI’s initial goal for 2030 was to double light-duty vehicle fuel economy compared with 2005 levels. However, to achieve the Paris target of limiting global temperature rises to 1.5 degrees, significant reductions will be needed from all transport modes and GFEI has also identified targets for decarbonising heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs), buses and motorcycles as well as action to support sustainable mobility through walking, cycling, shared mobility and public transport.

GFEI aims to improve the fuel economy of all road vehicles, including passenger cars and light vans (known as light-duty vehicles or LDVs) as well as lorries and trucks (known as heavy-duty vehicles or HDVs). The Initiative also works across all energy types, including internal combustion engines, hybrid engines, and electric vehicles. The Initiative is global, with a focus on developed and developing markets. GFEI works with local experts to develop tailored policy options for each country, based on assessments of the vehicle fleet and national context.

Around 100 countries have developed fuel economy policies with GFEI’s support. It takes an evidence-based approach, working with policymakers and stakeholders to understand the issues each country faces and to establish a national fuel economy baseline. The GFEI global toolkit explores the appropriate policy options to make vehicle fleets more fuel-efficient.

At a global and regional level, GFEI continues to make the case for improved fuel economy using both research and in-country experience. Its global network also provides the opportunity to share and learn from countries’ experiences and learnings through regular training events and workshops.
