The Clean Air Fund is a philanthropic organisation working globally to empower funders, researchers, policymakers and campaigners to deliver clean air for all. It was established by the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) and includes several leading philanthropic partners. The FIA Foundation was one of CAF's inaugural funders in 2019 and continues to support its research and advocacy, particularly around the impact of poor air quality on children and youth.

Everyone has the right to breathe clean air. Yet 90% of people worldwide do not. Air pollution affects every cell and organ in the body. Every year, millions of adults and children die prematurely, develop life-threatening diseases or see their health affected by air pollution. Tackling air pollution can improve and save countless lives. It can also inject urgency into the climate change agenda and help build sustainable, resilient economies. The causes of climate change are often the same as the causes of air pollution: transport, the power sector, industrial emissions and crop burning.

CAF’s portfolio of interventions includes air quality monitoring, assessing and communicating the health and economic impacts of pollution, supporting both policymakers and campaigners, and raising wider awareness.

CAF focuses on projects with demonstrable, scalable impact. Its approach is to pilot approaches and secure lasting change in a handful of geographies, provide the knowledge, tools and infrastructure to promote approaches that work, and collaborate to take applicable lessons and solutions to scale with governments, catalysing funding from a range of funders including development agencies and banks.

CAF is supported in its work by the FIA Foundation and has seen several partnerships including an air quality study of the Mayor of London’s ‘School Streets’ programme, and the FIA Foundation’s TRUE Initiative in Sofia, developing modelling for a forthcoming ULEZ scheme in the city.
