Protected bike lane networks save money and protect planet, new study shows

Investment in urban protected bicycle lanes can significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, lower transport costs, and prevent road fatalities compared to investment in other infrastructure, says a new report developed by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy’s (ITDP) global Cycling Cities campaign, supported by the FIA Foundation.

Strategy 2030: coupling safe and sustainable mobility with social justice

Over the past two years the FIA Foundation’s Board of Trustees has undertaken an in-depth review of our work and our future strategy. As we enter the UN Decade of Action for the Sustainable Development Goals, and a second Decade of Action for Road Safety, what do we as a Foundation want to help to achieve by 2030? There are six, inter-related, goals that we want to influence.

The Child Health Initiative Manifesto 2030 calls for a transformation of urban streets by 2030 into safe, low speed and accessible space that puts people first, encouraging zero carbon walking and cycling, by deploying the ‘Speed Vaccine’: safe footpaths and crossings; protected cycleways; and maximum 30 km/h speed limits anywhere children and traffic mix. The Manifesto also calls for a first ever Global Summit for Adolescents to galvanise political action and funding for a range of issues affecting Generation Z, including the leading killer of young people: road traffic. To deliver this agenda an €15m Advocacy Hub is being funded by the FIA Foundation.
